What a Pin actually is

A Pin is a bookmark. That sounds like a technicality and it explains almost every strange thing that happens when you try to save one.

Underneath, a Pin is a small record that points at a piece of media and, usually, at a source link somewhere else on the web. The media can be a still picture, a video, an animated GIF, or a multi-page Idea Pin. Because the Pin is only a pointer, the same picture can exist as hundreds of separate Pins saved by hundreds of different people, each with its own address, description and source link. Plenty of those source links are dead or point somewhere unrelated.

It is also why object type matters more here than on any other platform. Two Pin URLs can look identical and hold completely different things, so a tool has to read the Pin before it can tell you what you are downloading.

Resolution, and why your saved picture looks soft

This is the part nobody explains, and it is the reason most people end up looking for a downloader in the first place.

Pinterest does not serve one file per picture. It serves the same upload at several fixed widths, with the width written into the address. A grid card is typically 236 pixels wide. A larger preview is 474 or 564. The closeup view is often 736. Above all of those sits the originals rendition, the file the pinner actually uploaded, at whatever size it was.

So when you right-click a picture in your feed and choose Save, your browser hands you exactly what was on screen, frequently a 236 pixel wide thumbnail. Open it later and it looks soft, because it is. It was never the full picture.

A downloader's real job on this platform is asking for the originals rendition instead of the one your feed happened to render. On a 1000x1500 upload, originals is roughly four times the width and sixteen times the pixel count of the grid thumbnail, and on larger uploads the gap is wider still.

One honest limit: originals means the file that was uploaded and no more. If someone pinned a small picture, the original is small.

Idea Pins, video Pins, GIFs and boards

Idea Pins are Pinterest's multi-page format, up to 20 pages, full-screen vertical at 1080x1920. They behave like a carousel: one address, many pieces of media behind it, stills and video clips mixed. A tool that grabs the first media element it finds returns the cover and nothing else. Each page has to be enumerated separately, which is what this page does.

Video Pins are vertical by default, usually 1000x1500 or 1080x1920, and Pinterest allows anything from four seconds to fifteen minutes. They come back as MP4 with the audio track attached.

Animated Pins are genuinely GIFs rather than short videos, so they save as GIFs and keep their loop.

Boards are a different problem. A board holds Pins, sometimes thousands, and downloading one means walking the whole list and fetching each Pin in turn, with rate limits, partial failures and a folder of files at the end. That does not belong behind a single-link box, so paste the Pins you want individually — the same rule applies to other short-form sources. Secret boards are off-limits entirely: they need a logged-in session to see, and we do not ask for your Pinterest login.

Reference, credit and what to do next

Most people using this tool are building mood boards and reference folders: an interior designer collecting palettes, an illustrator gathering pose reference, someone planning a wedding or a room. Reposting is the minority case.

That use has an honest complication. Pinterest is a discovery surface for other people's work. Most Pins point at a source somewhere else, a portfolio, a shop, a blog, and the Pin is a copy of that work rather than the work itself. If you are collecting reference for a client deck or a public mood board, follow the source link and credit whoever made it.
