Instagram is four different things wearing one app

Almost every complaint about downloading from Instagram traces back to one fact: Instagram is a multi-format platform pretending to be a single feed. A downloader has to handle four genuinely different objects, and they fail for four different reasons.

Reels. The vertical format, encoded 1080x1920, with a clean public share URL under /reel/. This is the easy case and it is the case most tools are built around. The complication is the watermark, and it is worth being exact about whose it is. Instagram does not stamp its own logo onto a Reel you download. What you will often find burned into the frame is a TikTok mark or a CapCut end card, because the creator made the video somewhere else and cross-posted it. That mark is part of the picture at the pixel level. No tool removes it, and any page promising otherwise is either cropping your frame or painting a smear over the corner.

Feed videos. These are the older object, posted to the grid rather than to Reels, and they are not all one shape. A feed video can be 1:1 square, 4:5 portrait or 16:9 landscape, and older ones were capped at 60 seconds. Instagram has spent the last few years converting feed video into Reels, so the boundary between the two moves and a link that behaves like one can behave like the other. A tool that assumes vertical will hand you a cropped or letterboxed file. We return the ratio that was uploaded.

Carousels. A single post holding up to 20 images and videos, mixed freely, behind one /p/ URL. This is where the category falls over. A carousel is not one file. It is a parent post with a list of child objects, and a downloader has to enumerate that list and pull each child separately. Tools that grab the first media element they find in the page return slide one and stop, which is exactly why "it only downloaded the first slide" is the most common thing people say about these tools. We count the children first and give you a numbered result for each.

Stories. Live for 24 hours, then gone from the public surface with no archive behind them. A Story is reachable only while it is live and only from a public account. The owner keeps a private archive of their own Stories inside the app, and that archive is not a public URL, so nothing can reach it from outside. A Story link that worked yesterday has nothing on the other end today. That is not a broken tool. That is the format working as designed.

The login wall, and the password question

Instagram requires an account for a great deal of what people want to save, and pretending otherwise wastes your time. Private accounts are entirely off-limits here. If a profile is private, its posts have no publicly resolvable address, and there is no clever request that changes that. We return an error rather than a file.

This is where the category gets ugly, so here is the plain version. When a tool cannot reach private content, it has two ways to appear as though it can. It can run a progress animation and hand you an empty or unrelated file. Or it can ask for your Instagram username and password, at which point the credentials are the product. Account harvesting through downloader front-ends is a documented pattern in this corner of the web, and the tell is always the same: a login form on a page that claims to handle public content only.

The rule is simple. If a downloader asks for your Instagram password, close the tab and change that password.

The iOS Shortcut route, and where it breaks

A lot of people looking for this arrive from the iOS Shortcuts side rather than from search for a website, so it deserves a straight answer instead of being ignored.

An Instagram download Shortcut is a small automation you install into Apple's Shortcuts app. You share a post to it from Instagram's share sheet, it fetches the page, digs the media URL out of the response, and saves the file straight into Photos. People like it for two real reasons: it lives in the share sheet, so it is two taps with no browser at all, and the file lands in your camera roll rather than in Files.

Where it breaks is also real. A Shortcut is parsing Instagram's page structure, so it stops working the moment Instagram changes that structure, which happens often. Shortcuts that handle carousels correctly are rarer still, for the same reason web tools get carousels wrong: enumerating children is more work than grabbing the first file. And a Shortcut is code from a stranger with access to your share sheet, which is worth a thought before you install one.

A Shortcut and this page solve the same problem with the same technique. The difference is who carries the maintenance burden. When Instagram changes something here, fixing it is our job and you find out because it works. When it changes on a Shortcut, it is your job to find a new one.

Saving your own work, and what to do with it next

If the account is yours, start with Instagram's own export. Settings, then Accounts Centre, then Your information and permissions, then Download your information. It packages your posts, Reels, Stories archive and photos and emails you a link. It is slow, sometimes a day or more, and it is the only complete way to get everything at once. Anyone about to delete an account should do that first and use this page for the handful of posts they want back immediately.
