What SoundCloud actually sends you
SoundCloud does not stream you the file the artist uploaded. That upload is often a WAV, an AIFF, or a 320 kbps file. SoundCloud transcodes it into a small set of delivery formats, and one of those is what reaches your speakers.
For years the free-listening default was a 128 kbps MP3, served either as one progressive HTTP file or as an HLS playlist of segments, with a 64 kbps Opus stream alongside it for slower connections. SoundCloud has since moved its APIs to AAC over HLS: 160 kbps preferred, 96 kbps as fallback, with the old MP3 and Opus transcodes flagged for removal at the end of 2025.
So depending on the track and when it went up, your ceiling is 160 kbps AAC, 128 kbps MP3, 96 kbps AAC, or 64 kbps Opus. None of them is the master. That's what this category is least honest about.
The download flag is the permission signal
Every artist decides, per track, whether that track can be downloaded. It's a toggle in the track's permissions, and when it's on, SoundCloud shows a download button under the waveform and hands over the original uploaded file. Not a transcode. The actual master.
That toggle is the clearest statement of intent in this whole category. A producer who wants their beat in your DJ set turns it on. A label releasing a single leaves it off. When you're asking whether saving a track is fair, the artist has usually already answered.
So before you paste a link here, glance under the waveform. If the button is there, use it: their file beats ours every time. You'll need a SoundCloud account, since web downloads require a login, and you can take one track at a time. Those are SoundCloud's rules.
If the flag is off, sit with that. Sometimes it means a commercial release. Sometimes nobody touched the setting. The tool still works on public streams, and what you do with the file is your responsibility.
About “320 kbps”
A lot of the searches that land on pages like this one ask for 320kbps, and most of the pages answering them are lying. Here is the arithmetic.
Bitrate is not a quality dial you can turn up. It describes how much data per second is in the file. If SoundCloud hands over a 128 kbps stream, everything above that ceiling was thrown away during SoundCloud's own encode. Re-encoding into a file whose header says 320 kbps gives you something two and a half times larger that sounds identical at best. The container is padded. Nothing was recovered.
Any converter offering a 320kbps download of an arbitrary track is doing exactly that. The number in the filename is real. The audio behind it isn't.
What you can honestly get is the stream SoundCloud serves, kept as-is or converted once for compatibility. And if the artist enabled downloads, their button gives you the master, which is the only real route to a 320 kbps file. If what you actually need is audio out of a video, pulling audio out of a video instead is a different tool on this site.
iPhone, iPad, and Android

Is converting SoundCloud to MP3 legal?
Depends on the track and where you are. Your own uploads, Creative Commons material, or a track whose artist enabled downloads is fine. A commercial release you have no rights to isn't, and SoundCloud's terms prohibit it. The download toggle is the clearest signal available.

Why does the file say 128 kbps when the artist uploaded a WAV?
SoundCloud transcodes uploads for streaming and serves the transcode. The upload can be lossless and the stream will still be 128 or 160 kbps.

Only if the source is genuinely that high, which for a free-listening stream it usually isn't. If the artist enabled downloads, their button gives you the original upload.
How do I know if the artist allows downloads?
Look under the waveform for a download button. It appears only when the artist switched that permission on for that track.
Why does SoundCloud make me log in to use its own download button?
Web downloads require a signed-in account and the app can't download files at all. That's on SoundCloud's side, and it's why people look for another route.
Can I download a whole playlist?
