Why a Twitter video downloader stops working

Most tools in this category were built when this site was called Twitter and its API was free to use. In February 2023 that free access ended. Anything reading posts through the official route woke up to a bill it could not pay, and a lot of those projects were quietly abandoned. The pages stayed online. The buttons still spin. That is why "not working" is a real search with real volume behind it, and it is the most useful question this page can answer.

When a link fails here, it is almost always one of six things. The post was deleted — once it's gone, it's gone, and anyone promising deleted videos is either fetching an archive somebody else made or selling you nothing. The account is protected — those posts are served to approved followers only, and a signed-out request is declined, which is the account owner's decision working correctly. The media is age-gated or marked sensitive — X releases that only to signed-in accounts that opted in. The post is withheld in your country — X blocks specific posts in specific countries on legal demand; the post exists, it's just not being served where you are. The link isn't a post link — a profile, search or timeline URL contains no single post; we need one with /status/ in it. And the video isn't X's at all, which is its own section below.

We name which one it was rather than showing a generic error, because the fix differs every time and five of the six aren't fixable.

twitter.com, x.com, and why both still have to work

The name changed in 2023 and the domain move finished in 2024. Links saved before that never updated themselves. They sit in bookmarks, old Slack threads, blog posts and screenshots somebody is retyping by hand. People will be pasting twitter.com links for years, and a tool that rejects them is broken for no reason.

So both forms resolve here. x.com, twitter.com, mobile.twitter.com, t.co short links, /i/status/ links, links with /video/1 or /photo/1 on the end, and anything dragging a tracking tail. Same post, same file — the same job on Bluesky works the same way for the crowd holding accounts on both.

What X actually serves, and why quality varies so much

X does not keep one video per post. An upload gets re-encoded into several MP4 versions at different frame sizes and bitrates, and the app picks one based on your connection and screen. Longer videos also get an HLS playlist, pointing at a stream split into small chunks rather than one downloadable file. When that's all there is, the chunks have to be fetched in order and joined back into an MP4. We do that.

The thing nobody explains: the top rung is a property of the upload. What you get back is bounded by what the poster's app sent. A clip posted from a phone on a bad connection can top out lower than the same clip posted from a desktop.

X Premium moved that ceiling too. Paying accounts can upload longer videos at higher resolution than free accounts, so two posts that look identical in your timeline can offer different files depending on who posted them. If a download comes back soft, that is usually why, and no tool invents detail that was never uploaded.

The frame sizes X's ladder commonly produces: a low 320x180 fallback that's always present, a medium 480x270 or 640x360 rung almost always present, a 1280x720 rung on most modern uploads, a 1920x1080 rung on uploads from clients and accounts permitted to send it, and for longer videos an HLS stream joined into one MP4. Vertical posts use the same rungs rotated. We list what actually exists for the post you pasted, not a fixed menu.

GIFs aren't GIFs, and some videos aren't X's at all

Two things on this platform confuse more people than everything else.

The GIF button doesn't post a GIF. X converts an uploaded GIF into a silent, looping MP4 with no audio track. That's why a saved "GIF" arrives as a video file. It isn't a bug and nothing was substituted. If you need an actual animated GIF, convert the MP4 afterwards.

A video in a post isn't always hosted by X. Paste a YouTube or Vimeo link into a post and X renders a card with a thumbnail and a play button. The video plays in a third-party player and the file never touches X's servers, so there's nothing here to fetch — save it from YouTube instead. You can tell them apart before you paste: a card shows the source domain under the player, native video doesn't. Quote posts follow the same logic. If the video is in the quoted post, pasting either link finds it.

What to do with the clip once it's saved

Most people saving from X are collecting: a reaction clip, a demo somebody posted, a piece of their own thread they want back as a file. The next job is turning it into something you can post yourself.
