Newgrounds is an archive, not a feed

Every other platform this tool set covers is a feed. You open it to see what happened today. Newgrounds is an archive. The site went up in 1995, older than everything else on this list by a decade or more, and most of what people come for was uploaded years ago by someone who has since moved on. That one fact changes what a downloader can do here, and no page ranking for this query mentions it.

Through the 2000s the portal was where Flash animation and Flash games lived, and a large part of what the internet now treats as its own early culture was made there. Then Adobe ended support for Flash on 31 December 2020 and browsers blocked the plugin within weeks. An enormous body of work stopped playing. Newgrounds answered with the Newgrounds Player, a desktop runtime that keeps those submissions running, and by playing much of that content in-browser through an emulator. The portal still works when the technology under it does not.

Here is what that means when you paste a link. A movie from 2003 is a .swf file, and that file is a program. It carries vector shapes, a timeline and ActionScript, and it draws each frame as it runs. It can take your mouse, branch, loop forever, or wait for a click. There is no sequence of frames inside to extract, which is why no tool can hand you an MP4 of it. Anything claiming otherwise is screen-recording a playback session, which is a new recording rather than the original work. A submission from roughly 2015 onward is usually a real video file, and that behaves like video anywhere: we read it, you save it, done.

The audio portal is a third thing again. It launched in 2004 as a separate section for standalone music and has nothing to do with the animation portal beyond a shared login — another platform where the artist decides what can be saved. That is why the mp3 version of this search has real volume behind it. Those people want a track a musician published, on its own page, as its own upload, and that saves cleanly.

Treat all of it carefully. Many people saving from here are archiving things they grew up with, and some of it is already gone: submissions get deleted, accounts close, and a Flash file with no runtime left to play it is one bad decade from unreadable. This community leans harder toward preservation than the commercial platforms do, and the projects keeping tens of thousands of Flash works alive were built by volunteers.

The ethics are different here too. Artists keep the rights to what they post, the site has never claimed them, and plenty of them want their work saved and passed around as long as their name goes with it. Some say exactly that in licensing terms on the submission page. Read it, follow it, credit them. Here that is the norm rather than a disclaimer.

What you actually get, by era and by portal

Newgrounds serves three different things under one roof, and what you can save depends on which you pasted.

A portal movie from roughly 2015 onward is an H.264 MP4 with AAC audio, and you get the MP4 as uploaded. A portal movie from the Flash era is a .swf program: no video file exists, so we explain and stop. A Flash classic with an artist-uploaded video version gives you the H.264 MP4, usually at the original's small frame size. A portal game is a .swf or an HTML5 bundle — interactive software, not video, not in scope. An audio portal track is an MP3, and you get the file the artist uploaded, not re-encoded.

Two notes. Converted classics come back small because the original was drawn for a 2004 browser window, so a 640-pixel-wide file is the real thing rather than a downgrade — the same is true of artists who reposted their back catalogue to YouTube. And adult-rated submissions sit behind an age wall needing a signed-in account, so those return a message instead of a file.

If you are cutting it into something

Animation archives get used: retrospectives, best-of reels, a channel walking through one studio's back catalogue. That work starts with a folder of saved files and a lot of scrubbing.
