Bilibili does not work like a Western video host

The failures people blame on downloaders here are usually one of five things.

BV IDs. A video lives at bilibili.com/video/BV1xx411c7mD. The string starting BV1 is its identity. It replaced av numbering in 2020, so bilibili.com/video/av170001 is a legacy address that still gets pasted into forums and wikis. Those links generally still resolve, and this tool resolves them for you.

Parts. One BV ID can hold a single video, or 30 numbered parts under one page, addressed as ?p=1, ?p=2 and so on. Lecture series, tournament VODs and chaptered streams all arrive this way, so "download this video" is ambiguous here in a way it is not on YouTube. A tool has two honest options: ask which part you meant, or fetch all of them. Guessing part 1 is why people end up with a five-minute intro instead of the episode.

Danmaku is not in the file. The wall of comments scrolling across the picture is the site's signature feature and it is not painted into the video. It arrives as a separate stream, historically XML and now a protobuf feed keyed to that part, which the player draws over the picture as it plays — the same split-stream problem shows up on YouTube. Save the video and you get a clean picture. No downloader can change that, because the overlay was never in the encode.

Separate video and audio. Most videos are delivered over DASH, so picture and sound are two streams pulled in parallel. A downloader has to fetch both and mux them into one container. Skip that and you get a silent file, or a video plus an orphan .m4s you cannot play. That is where most "no sound" complaints start.

Three codecs, not one. Depending on the video and the client asking, streams come as AVC (H.264), HEVC (H.265) or AV1. AVC opens anywhere. HEVC and AV1 are smaller at the same quality, common on newer uploads, and the two most likely to refuse to play in an older editor or phone. So we label the codec before you save.

Why your quality options are lower than you expected, and why some videos will not load at all

Two walls sit between an anonymous request and the file people assume they can get. They produce similar errors and have different causes.

The login wall. Quality tiers are gated on account state. Signing in unlocks part of the ladder, and the top of it, 1080p high-bitrate, 1080p60, 4K, HDR and Dolby, requires a paid Premium membership, 大会员. That is platform policy rather than a technical obstacle a tool routes around, so an anonymous downloader cannot offer 4K here.

The region wall. Much of the licensed catalogue, the anime and the broadcast series, is licensed for mainland China only — the same way territorial licensing works on other hosts. From a US connection those pages return an error that explains nothing. That error is a licence boundary rather than a broken tool or your network. There is a separate international site at bilibili.tv with a smaller catalogue and its own rights deals, which is why a title on one is missing from the other.

Telling the two apart takes a minute. Open the video in a private window while signed out. If the page itself refuses to play it, that is a licence or login gate and no downloader changes it. If it plays but only offers 360p or 480p, that is the anonymous ceiling. If a different video downloads normally in the same session, the first one is gated.

What an anonymous request typically gets: a standard user upload comes back 360p or 480p, sometimes 720p, as MP4 with audio muxed in. A popular upload may reach 720p where Bilibili serves it, in AVC, HEVC or AV1. 1080p high-bitrate and 1080p60 need an account state we don't have. 4K, HDR and Dolby Vision need a Premium membership. Licensed anime and broadcast series are usually blocked outside mainland China. There's no separate audio-only path — extract it from the saved MP4 instead.

Bangumi, user uploads, and the rights question

Bilibili holds two kinds of content on the same domain.

Bangumi is the licensed side: anime seasons, films and broadcast series under /bangumi/play/, licensed by territory and often behind Premium. We do not touch that catalogue, and outside mainland China the page usually will not play for you either.

User uploads are the BV pages that make up most of the site: creators, clips, lectures, commentary, game footage, and a lot of material somebody else made. An uploader who re-cut an episode cannot give you permission for it, because they never had it.

Bilibili's terms restrict copying and distributing content from the service, and the copyright question follows the rights holder. Saving a lecture for offline viewing is one thing. Re-posting a studio's episode is infringement whichever tool made the file. General information, not legal advice.
